I've been disappointed and overwhelmed by the past few seasons of SNL. I've loved the musical guest and hated the host, been disappointed at live performances and died laughing at the live skit bloopers, and then, well, Katy Perry.
The girl popped up (hilariously) with the Elmo-boob sketch, and ended her Teenage Dream tour with a host spot, in which EVERY SINGLE SKIT was hilarious. That might be because of where I stand politically, how I feel about repeat-offenders like Stefon and the Japanese Pop show, or even the fact that I have a crush on the formerly-gospel-singing Katherine Hudson/Katy Perry/Katy Brand/Kathy-Beth Terry, but regardless of the reasoning, last night's show was awesome, and I think maybe they've finally figured it out again.
There have been sketches like the "Someone Like You" sob spoof that kept me going, but the star-studded digital short this week, plus the relevant and cheeky appearance by Alec Baldwin, and of course, the fact that one of the characters on Weekend Update was seriously based on someone I used to live with, proved to me that they've got the formula down and maybe SNL isn't done being my favorite after all.
And in case you're wondering, I have seen EVERY SINGLE EPISODE of Saturday Night Live, all the way back to the original airing of the show, then known only as "Saturday Night". I love the cast right now, love the featured players, and I'm hoping this show will still kick ass when I have kids so that they can watch it and not get ANY of the jokes until after they're in college.
I heart you, Lorne Michaels.
